I'm leaning toward a Skutt K1027, which is cone 6, because an awful lot of BTUs are consumed to make that extra 350 degrees, and I'm not sure it is worth it.
I don't need to go to cone 10 for my ego... cone 6 is just fine (besides, I like the electric cone 6 glaze formulae I've got better than the cone 10s). "Back in the Day", there was a huge flap over firing to cone 10 as the "only true high-fire stoneware... the rest is just not high fire". I'm afraid I don't buy that argument, or theory, or whatever it was (artist egos, I'd say) that caused the divisiveness. Anyway, clay and glaze formulation have both come a very long way in the last 40 years. And while I wouldn't have even thought of firing to cone6 in an electric kiln back then, I've changed as much as clay art itself. So bring it on! Girls just wanna have fun!
