Power to the People!

Actually, it is more like "Power to the Shop"... but whatever. The guys from the Electric Company came out yesterday morning and put in the new pole and the much bigger transformer so we could get 200 amp service to the shop. That will allow Henry to use all his equipment and at some point I'll be able to power a cone 6-10 electic kiln as well. Way cool... now I just have to save up to get a kiln!

I'm leaning toward a Skutt K1027, which is cone 6, because an awful lot of BTUs are consumed to make that extra 350 degrees, and I'm not sure it is worth it.

I don't need to go to cone 10 for my ego... cone 6 is just fine (besides, I like the electric cone 6 glaze formulae I've got better than the cone 10s). "Back in the Day", there was a huge flap over firing to cone 10 as the "only true high-fire stoneware... the rest is just not high fire". I'm afraid I don't buy that argument, or theory, or whatever it was (artist egos, I'd say) that caused the divisiveness. Anyway, clay and glaze formulation have both come a very long way in the last 40 years. And while I wouldn't have even thought of firing to cone6 in an electric kiln back then, I've changed as much as clay art itself. So bring it on! Girls just wanna have fun!
