Back in 2001, when we decided to purchase the farm ("Bought the Farm" has too many meanings for me to be comfortable using it - especially at my age), the balance of Henry's inheritance was to be spent on toys/tools that he'd need once we moved up here permanently.
We looked at tractors, and the implements that go with them, for several years before he decided he wanted a 4WD Kubota 3830. Yeah, that's a big one... We needed a 4WD because of the hills, and Henry had looked at several tractors we saw in the paper. None were "the" tractor, and since we had a Big Ford tractor with a bucket, a box scraper, and a brush-hog, we really weren't in a hurry to run right out and drop a whole lot of money on a brand new tractor.
Last week we saw a private party ad for a Kubota with all the "stuff" a guy could want, at about half the cost of a new one. It was only a couple of years old, had been well maintained and was close enough to go have a look.
Long story short, we now have three tractors, counting the Ditch Witch with it's backhoe and plow blade. The new tractor is actually the same size as our big Ford tractor, but 20 years newer, and 4WD. HHmmm... does this mean I get the "old" blue Ford tractor for my orchard?? Cool.
