Pleased as Punch...

Doesn't this log look pleased to be helping us keep warm this winter?

Yesterday was "going to the store day", not a decision taken kightly when you live in a forest. I started down the driveway and found the road blocked by a BIG fallen fir tree! Backing up the driveway wasn't a piece of cake either, even though Henry has cleared and graded some turn-outs for construction trucks to pass. A mile of single-track gravel through the forest wasn't going to cut it for heavily laden flat-beds vs. pickup trucks. The turn outs weren't where I was, though, so back up I did.

Later in the day, Henry went down with the chain saw to move the log. Even though we don't like burning fir because there is so much creosote in it, He chunked the tree into stove-sized lengths. We loaded some into the bucket of the tractor and some into the bed of the four-wheeler for the trip back to the house. We'll split them later, and stack them in the woodpile. The tree was dead already, so he thought it would be rotten and useless, but quite a bit of it was sound and usable.
