Grapefruit Morning

Today the rain stopped, and then started again - not big news, really. I was in Palm Springs for the GATE conference all weekend... interesting to be at a conference where I didn't know anyone and I wasn't presenting. Dr. Cathy does that all the time, but I find it a bit disconcerting.

Interesting workshops; several on technology. One presenter said our elementary and middle schoolers (who were born after 1994 when Netscape made the web accessable) were "Digital Natives"... they grew up 'speaking the language' of technology. They have always had computers, the net, cell phones, IM, and the like. A bit like we have always had Radio and Autos. Some of us are recient arrivals in the land of techology, we are the "Digital Emmigrants" - we have had to 'learn the language' (and some of us have notorious diffculty learning any new language) of technology. We tend to get lost when the natives speak quickly. There are others of us who are "Digital Aliens": expats with Green Cards. Folks who really have no idea of ever going back and enjoy living with the technology at hand. I'm not sure where I fit into this scheme of things.

Sunrise this morning was a real treat; bright gold, silvery-grey and pink against the pale Wedgewood Blue of the sky. The air was so clear, and the light so yellow, it made me forget all about the haze that hangs in the air in SoCal. People at The Geysers might have been seen if they were walking around outside in bright colored raincoats. (not really, but it seemed so - the variation in color on the mountain was pretty amazing).

I brought home grapefruit... tiny yellow suns of juice and tartness. Fun to go outside and pick one for breakfast. Much better than going to the store for un-ripe, shipped-in fruit... which is what we have to do here. For once I'm glad my family doesn't share my fondness for certain foods. I almost wish there had been more room in my bag for fruit, but then they wouldn't have been nearly so special.

This is a five day week... and I'm already looking forward to Friday. Bad sign.
