Butterfly Bush

When it snowed so much last December my beautiful Butterfly Bush broke off at the base. When I whined to Marnie, she said it would probably be OK... she prunes hers back severely in Winter anyway and the pruning seems to encourage the new growth and flowers.

I made the stumpy part tidier and hoped for the best... but by June there were a few sprouts only, (which the dogs promptly chewed off) then nothing for a very long time. I put a spare tomato cage around the poor little stub and let it be. After a while I noticed that the little bush seemed to be sprouting again, and sure enough... it made it! Flowers and all.

I'm really glad this Butterfly Bush made it! In my part of Oregon, you can't buy a Bedelia any more because they are consideered an invasive species... when they get loose in the woods, they crowd out the other vegetation. English Ivy is another "domestic import gone bad"... no planting of Ivy on ugly buildings up here, either! Not a bad thing if you've ever tried to get rid of it from your trees!
